Therapy with Aetna in Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama

Most Aetna plans cover outpatient therapy for a diagnosed mental health condition. Aetna says routine outpatient therapy visits don’t need prior approval, though higher levels of care do. Your cost depends on whether the therapist is in network, your copay or coinsurance, and your deductible. Aetna stopped selling Marketplace plans for 2026, so most Aetna members in these states have coverage through work or Medicare.

Aetna is a national insurer owned by CVS Health. In Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama, most people with an Aetna card get it through an employer, a university student plan or an Aetna Medicare plan. This guide covers what Aetna plans usually pay for therapy, how to check your own plan, and how to find a therapist in Aetna’s network.

Does Aetna cover therapy?

Yes, most Aetna plans cover outpatient therapy for a diagnosed mental health condition. That usually includes individual therapy, family therapy when it’s part of treating someone’s condition, psychiatric evaluations and medication management.

What varies is how much you pay and which therapists are in your network.

If you had an Aetna Marketplace plan

CVS Health announced on May 1, 2025, that Aetna would leave the Affordable Care Act individual Marketplace for 2026. About 1 million people in 17 states needed new coverage, including about 107,000 in Georgia.

If you bought an Aetna plan on HealthCare.gov in 2025, you’ve moved to a different insurer for 2026. Check your new plan’s network before you book, because your therapist may not be in it. Aetna’s employer plans, student plans and Medicare plans weren’t part of that exit.

How Aetna handles mental health benefits

Aetna manages behavioral health benefits itself for most of its plans. Its behavioral health precertification list covers Aetna, Aetna Medicare and Innovation Health plans, so the same approval rules apply across those.

Some employers who use Aetna hire a separate company for mental health benefits. If your card or plan documents name another company for behavioral health, call that number for therapy questions.

Do you need approval before therapy?

Usually not. Aetna says it doesn’t require precertification for routine outpatient behavioral health therapy, or for routine medication management visits.

Approval is needed for higher levels of care. Aetna’s behavioral health precertification list includes services such as residential treatment and transcranial magnetic stimulation. Employer plans can add their own rules, so if you’re not sure, ask member services.

Where to find your benefits

Your Summary of Benefits and Coverage is at aetna.com or in the Aetna Health app, or on your employer’s benefits site. Aetna Medicare members have an Evidence of Coverage instead. Our insurance guide shows which line covers therapy and what the cost terms mean.

Telehealth with Aetna

Most Aetna plans cover telehealth therapy with in-network providers. Cost sharing can apply, so ask whether a telehealth session costs the same as an office visit under your plan.

Aetna also works with telehealth companies. It added Array, a large telepsychiatry practice, to its network, and some Aetna plans list online therapy services. Which services you can use depends on your employer’s plan. Check aetna.com, the Aetna Health app or member services for the options in your plan.

The therapist has to be licensed in the state where you are during the session. If you live near a state line, such as in Bristol, Tennessee, or in Columbus, Georgia, tell the practice where you’ll be when you join.

If you have an Aetna Medicare plan

Aetna Medicare Advantage plans cover outpatient mental health care under Medicare’s rules, with the plan’s own network and copays. Since January 1, 2024, Medicare has paid licensed marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors, which widens your choices.

Here’s one Tennessee example from Aetna’s 2027 Summary of Benefits. Aetna Medicare Eagle (PPO), H5521-279, serves about 70 Tennessee counties, including Davidson, Shelby, Hamilton, Rutherford, Williamson and Wilson:

Aetna Medicare Eagle (PPO), 2027In networkOut of network
Individual or group therapy$0 copay20% coinsurance
Outpatient psychiatric therapy$0 copay20% coinsurance
Monthly plan premium$0, and it lowers your Part B premium by $100
Yearly maximum you pay$9,850 in network$10,850 in and out of network combined

The plan needs no referral to see a specialist. Its mental health section says your provider may need approval from Aetna before some services are covered. This plan has no Part D drug coverage, so you’d need a separate drug plan.

Other Aetna Medicare plans charge different amounts. Medicare open enrollment for 2027 ends December 7, 2026. Our Medicare guide covers how Medicare pays for therapy.

Aetna student health plans

Many colleges offer an Aetna Student Health plan, and each school sets its own rules. Emory University’s 2026 to 2027 plan is one example:

  • Therapy costs a $10 copay per visit with core network providers, then the plan pays 90%. Out-of-network care costs more.
  • The mental health benefit covers office visits with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and licensed professional counselors, including telemedicine.
  • Students start at Emory’s student health services and need a written referral to see preferred providers while they’re on campus.

Before booking, check your own school’s plan summary for the referral rule. Many campus counseling centers also offer free sessions.

If your therapist isn’t in network

Aetna’s Open Access and PPO plans usually include some out-of-network benefits, and its HMO and EPO plans usually don’t. Our insurance guide explains how to claim with a superbill.

How to find a therapist in Aetna’s network

  1. Use Aetna’s provider search. Sign in at aetna.com or in the Aetna Health app and search for behavioral health providers with your plan selected.
  2. Then search LunahUP. Only 3 Tennessee profiles list Aetna so far, so search your city as well and ask each practice whether it takes your Aetna plan.
  3. Confirm with the practice. Ask whether the therapist you want is in network for your exact plan and is taking new clients.

If Aetna denies a claim

Employer and student plans follow the standard appeal steps in our insurance guide. Aetna Medicare Advantage plans have their own appeal steps, described in your Evidence of Coverage.

Questions to ask Aetna member services

Along with the standard questions, ask Aetna:

  • “Is my mental health coverage managed by Aetna or by another company my employer chose?”
  • “Which telehealth services does my plan include for therapy?”
  • If you had an Aetna Marketplace plan in 2025: “Is my current therapist in my new insurer’s network?”

The short version

  • Most Aetna plans cover outpatient therapy for a diagnosed condition.
  • Aetna left the Marketplace for 2026, so most Aetna members in these states have coverage through work, school or Medicare.
  • Routine outpatient therapy doesn’t need prior approval from Aetna. Residential care and some treatments do.
  • Since 2024, Medicare pays marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors, which widens choices for Aetna Medicare members.
